Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the prevelance of the main causes of vaginitis: vulvovaginal candidosis (VVC) and bacterial vaginosis (BV) and to investigate the effects of several risk factors (pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, long time antibiotic or corticosteroid therapy, contraceptive methods, history of sexually transmitted disease, frequency of coitus) in women with abnormal vaginal discharge. In totally 170 cases, BV (Nugent score > 7) was diagnosed in 52 (3.5%) and Candida spp. were isolated in 24 (13.7%). Combined infection was detected in 8.2% of all cases. A significant association was found between intrauterine device (IUD) use and BV (p = 0.01). The prevalence of VVC and BV in IUD and condom users was 8.6%, 48.6% and 24%, 16%, respectively. In conclusion, BV is the most common cause of vaginitis in symptomatic women. Since women with IUD carry a risk for BV, those cases should be followed-up with regular intervals.
