Abstract

Spectral-spatial feature extraction methods present an effective way forclassification of hyperspectral images. However, performances of thesemethods may decrease depending on different data sets, classifier type, number of training samples, noise and smoothness level of data sets. In thispaper, these terms are called as robustness criteria. This paper firstdiscusses the effects of each robustness criteria for the feature extractionmethods in the state-of-the-art. Secondly, a robust feature extraction methodthat can solve the aforementioned problems is proposed for hyperspectralimage classification. The proposed method first performs dimensionalityreduction and then extracts features using multiple edge preserving filtersand intrinsic image decomposition method. Each robustness criteria isthoroughly examined in experiments and the results are compared with thestate-of-the-art feature extraction methods. Experimental resultsdemonstrate that the proposed method not only achieves betterclassification accuracies for different classifiers at lower training samplesbut also presents robust performance on different data sets that includesnoise and smoothness effects.
