Abstract

Although the frequency of child marriages has been decreasinggradually worldwide, it is still an important topic. In the world, childmarriages have been found to be much higher among female childrenas compared to male. According to the law, each individual under theage of 18 is a child, and each girl married under this age is recognizedas a child bride. These marriages have been carried out according tothe self interests of the girl s parents and the families who the girl wentto. Early marriage affects the entire life of a girl. Some of these negativeeffects include taking on the responsibility of a family and children at ayoung age, leaving their education, not having a profession, economicdependency, and being ignored and seen as unworthy in the family. The most problematic area about these marriages is seen in the areaof reproductive health. Forced marriage without a girl s consent, responding to an older man s sexual desire (which is considered rape),lack of knowledge about pregnancy prevention, adolescent pregnanciesand their risks for the mother-fetus and newborn, increased risk forsexually-transmitted infections, frequent pregnancies and births in highnumbers, and other problems. Governments and non-governmentalorganizations have very important responsibilities in the context ofinternational laws for the prevention of these marriages. It is importantfor nurses and midwives who provide healthcare services to analyzethe causes and consequences of child marriages and to organize thecare and social support services in the scope of their traditional andcontemporary roles. Parents and families efforts to hide child marriagesand pregnancies in order to avoid legal consequences of such marriagesmake it diffi cult to specify the problem and reach these groups. Nursesand midwives can gain a girl s trust, can be guides for the parents, and can raise awareness among young people and parents about theprevention of such marriages and pregnancies.
