Abstract

This article attempts to clarify the question of the role of Judas in the gospels and to put forth the information about this issue by comparing the aforementioned gospels and their attempts to challenge the link between these data and the accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ by the betrayal of an apostle, especially within the approaches to crucifixion in Islamic thought. Most of the existing narrations and explanations about the issue appear in the Canonical and Apocryphal Gospels and in the Holy Qur’an. Most of the reports that appear in the books of the interpretation of the Holy Qur’an are in harmony with canonical Gospels to a great extent. The differing point in these resources is the clear Qur’anic information concerning the fact that the person crucified was not Jesus Christ. On the other hand, it is doubtless that one should handle the passages that appear in the canonical and apocryphal Gospels regarding Judas Iscariot’s being either a betrayer or “a hero” with care
