Abstract

Deyiş -Alevi folk poems- are part of a semantic system formed by the Alevi community based upon their collective experiences. Detaching them from their original context and transforming them into diverse genres is a controversial topic within the community as it can be followed through the discussions reflected through the media. In this study, based on the interviews carried with the persons who are defining themselves as Alevi, the meanings attributed by them to the ongoing popularization of deyiş which are considered to be sacred by the community will tried to be understood. Also, interpretation of the deyiş by the people who are not defining themselves as Alevi but still enjoy them will also be taken into consideration. It is the priority of this article, to understand the extent of the fixedness and homogeneity of the meanings of a supposedly uniform community living in a modern society and how permeable their borders can be and their reflections on the degree of diversity regarding the interaction between sacred and mundane in their daily lives.
