Abstract

Many studies have been performed on different vegetable oils as alternative fuel in diesel engines. One of the most important problems encountered in use of the vegetable oils as alternative fuels in engines is their high viscosity's. High viscosity comes some problems in use of these oils. in this study, to overcome this problem sunflovver oil methyl ester was mixed volumetrically with diesel fuel in %50 proportion. The mixture were tested in four stroke, air cooled, direct injection diesel engine with single cylinder in different speed (rpm) and engine performance and emission values were measured. These values were compared with the ones for diesel fuel. The results shovved that the mixture of sunflower oil methyl ester (SFOME) and diesel fuel gave a power and torque close to the values obtained from the diesel fuel and the amounts of pollutants decreased. At the maximum torque, amount of CO and NOx decreased 21% and 11% respectively. Similarly they decreased 7% and 12% at maximum speed. As a result, considering the exhaust gas emissions it was seen that SFOME and diesel fuel mixture could be used as an alternative fuel in a diesel engine.
