Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the study was to find out the effectiveness of sodium valproat (VPA) in patients with long term migraine headache, resistive to other applied treatment measures. Patients and Methods: Thirty-five patients (33 women,2 men) were involved in this study. These patients applied to the Headache Clinic of Erciyes University Medicine Faculty Neurology Department with the complaint of long term headache who were diagnosed as having migraine, not benefiting from conventional migrain treatments. These patients were given 500-1000 mg sodium valproate every evening for six months. The severity of headache was evaluated before and after valproate treatment with the aid of an oral evaluation scale. Results: The severity of headache decreased in 22 patient and did not changed at all or in desired level in 2 patients. Four patients discontinued the study for several reason. Conclusion: It was deducted that sodium valproate was an important choice in the profilactic treatment of drug resistive migraine cases.
