Abstract

Purpose: Because of probable complications with penil surgery and anesthesia, treatment methods of phimosis have been developed as alternative methods of phimosis against traditional treatment of and successful cases have been reported. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the of use corticosteroid creams to treat phimosis. Patient and Method: This study was carried out between January 2003 and September 2004. Fifty-three children who had severe phimosis were included in the study. The age of the patients ranged from 2-8 years. The study group consisted of 36 patients and the control group consisted of 17. In the study group, topical 0.05% beclomethasone dipropionate cream was applied on the preputium of the children for 6 weeks, twice a day. In the control group, during the same time period the children were treated with gentle retraction of the foreskin and local hygiene. The retractibility of preputium was checked at end of the treatment period. Results: In the study group, complete retraction of the preputium was seen in 21 patients (58.3%) and partial retraction in 9 patients (25%). There was no response to treatment in 6 cases (16.6%). In the control group, no complications were seen throughout the study. Conclusion: We conclude that the application of 0.05% beclomethasone dipropionate is a safe and successful method in treating phimosis according to the result of our study.
