Abstract

Psoriasis which its etiology is not known properly, is a chronic, inflammatory and hyperproliferative skin disease. In numerous studies the relationship between psoriasis and diabetes had been the subject for investigation since the genetic tendency and emotional stress were emphasized etiologically. Supportive findings for this issue were found. Psoriatic patients were evaluated for oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) so as to estimate the frequency of diabetes mellitus in this patient group. Glucose levels were compared with the control group whose body mass index (BMI) were similar. Diabetes was 19.3% in patients with psoriasis and impaired glucose tolerance was 12.9%. These ratios for the cojitrol group were 3.2% and 12.8%, respectively. Both mean fasting and postprandial glucose values did not differ statistically between two groups. However, prevelance of diabetes mellitus in patients with psoriasis was higher significantly than the control group. In conclusion subject of relation between psoriasis and diabetes needs to be further studied.
