Abstract

Hypoglycemia is one of the major life threatening complication of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients. Aim of our study is to determine relationship between type, regimens of insuline treatment and severity of hypoglycemia. We evaluated 158 type 1 and type 2 DM patients who were using insulin at least for 6 months. We divided our patient to three groups according to insulin regimes. I. Group: Using basal insulin and/or oral antidiabetic (OAD) (n:11.7%), II. Group: Using mixture insulin (n:102, 64.5%), III. Group: Using intensive insulin treatment (n:45, 28.5%). We also grouped patients into fýve group according to insulin types. 24 questioned face to face inquiry were applied to patients. We evaluated the severe and mild hypoglycemic episodes in one year and last third months. We also recorded the hospitalisation number due to severe hypoglycemia. There was no relationship between severe hypoglycemia and insulin regimes (p=0.251). But intensive treatment group had more severe hypoglycemic episodes than others. Only one patient had severe hypoglycemia in basal insulin treatment group. Mild hypogylcemia was rarely reported in basal insulin treatment group. Intensive and mixture insulin groups had high mild hypoglycemic attact than basal insulin group (p
