Abstract

Achalasia is a neuromuscular disorder of unknown origin which is characterised by insufficient relaxation and loss of peristaltic waves of esophagus due to a relative increase in the lower esophageal sphincter tonus. Although the etiology has not been well established, degeneration and decrease in the number of ganglion cells in the myenteric plexus of esophageal corpus and gastroesophageal junction has been shown. An 11-year-old boy applied to our clinic with complaints of chronic vomiting, abdominal pain and growth retardation. The diagnosis was made by performing a barium esophagogram after seeing a marked dilatation of distal esophageal section on his abdominal ultrasonography. There was an evident relief in his symptoms after surgical treatment. This uncommon disease of childhood was found interesting to be presented.
