Abstract

In the present study, we intended to examine that the effects of perinatal magnesium sulphate treatment on maternal and neonatal calcium metabolism. Seven preeclamptic pregnant women at term, treated with magnesium sulfate were included in the study group. Twenty-six uneventful pregnancies at term were selected as controls. The concentrations of total magnesium, total calcium, inorganic phosphate and intact parathyroid-hormone were measured in maternal and fetal serum samples. Serum levels of total magnesium and parathyroid hormone were increased in the fetuses of preeclampic subjects. It was noted that reduction of parathyroid hormone secretion and hypocalcemia were due to inhibition of high magnesium concentrations in preeclamptic women. Magnesium levels in fetuses exposed to magnesium sulfate increased and this increase was not found similar between mothers and fetuses. It was concluded that fetal parathyroid hormone concentrations increased and this prevented the development of clinically significant hypocalcemia.
