Abstract

Effects of three different leaching procedure (cold water, hot water, alcohol/toluen mixture) on natural durability of most common exotic wood species in Turkey, sapelli (Entandrophragma cylindricum), iroko (Chlorophora excelsa) ve doussie (Afzelia.bipindensis) against decay fungi were evaluated. According to JIS K 1571 (2004) standart [1], 3 different procedures were followed. Each procedure involved 6-9 consecutive leaching cycles with water or solvent volume of 10 times specimen volume and 60 º C drying temperature. Irpex lacteus and Postia placenta were used as decay fungi representing white rot and brown rot, respectively. Mass losses of specimen were varied according to leaching process and decay fungi used. Doussie showed the highest mass loss after leached with hot water process while the other species did not give significant differences when compared their unleached controls. Based on results doussie and iroko demonstrated the highest natural durability against decay fungi with exceptions of hot water extracted doussie and white rot exposed iroko, Sapelli, on the other hand, was the least durable against the decay fungi tested regardless of leaching procedure.
