Abstract

In this study, discharge coefficient is found as a function of the hole area and the internal pressure of the pipe. The variation in leakage areas is performed at first and then, hydrodynamic model was established to calculate the discharge coefficient for various scenarios. Also, the results are validated with Toricelli (orifice) equation. After verification, the outcomes were acquired for four different hole geometries according to various hole areas and pressure values. An area ratio (r), as the ratio of the hole area to the pipe cross-section area, and pressure ratio (p), as the ratio of the internal pressure to the external pressure, are used to provide dimensional homogeneity. Furthermore, performance indicators such as determination coefficient, root mean square of error and mean absolute error were considered in the selection of optimal equations. We obtained the determination coefficients as R² = 0.93, R² = 0.88, R² = 0.93 and R² = 0.95 for round hole, rectangular hole, triangular hole and zigzag hole, respectively. In conclusion, contrary to the opinion that the discharge coefficient value stated in the literature can be taken as constant within the scope of this study, the discharge coefficient, which is considered to have a serious effect on the leakage flow especially in large-scale calculations, vary between 0.65 and 0.74. Thus, it becomes more accurate with different equations for each hole geometry and orientation.
