Abstract

After realizing the effects of constructivist and inquiry aproaches in teaching-learning science, studying students' abstract reasoning abilities become crucial importance. These cognitive abilities could be differ from one society to another, even differ among students who are in the same classess. In this process, students' socio-economic levels would play significant roles on these differences. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of the school types on students' cognitive development levels. The Science Cognitive Development Test (SCDT) developed by the authors was applied on the subjects (N=396) drawn from seventh and eighth grade students at private and public-middle schools in the four cities. The test results showed that the private school students have higher cognitive development levels than the puclic school students.
