Abstract

In recent years, percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) is being used with increasing frequency in the management of the liver abscesses. In this study, the efficacy of the computed tomography (CT) guided PCD of the pyogenic liver abscesses was evaluated. The patients' ages varied from 27 to 76 (mean 55). Two female, 11 male patients (13 total) with hepatic abscess underwent PCD using CT guidance. The etiology was hepatobiliary surgery in 3 patients, gallbladder perforation in I patient, cholecystitis in I patient, and traffic accident in 1 patient. In 7 patients the etiology was unknown (cryptogenic). Catheter duration ranged between I and 2.5 months (mean 1.7 months). In 11 patients PCD was successful!. In 1 patient we achieved subtotal cure, whose residual collection resolved after antibiotheraphy. The PCD failed in one patient. As a complication; one patient had ipsilateral pleurisy , and an another patient had ipsilateral empyema. There was no recurrence in the followup period with a mean of 32 months (varied from 1 to 126 months). In conclusion; CT guided PCD of the liver abscesses is an alternative treatment to surgery, with lower mortality and morbidity rates.
