Abstract

In this study, psychological factors affecting the Istanbul Stock Exchange 100 index in Turkey were analyzed econometrically. For this purpose, BIST 100 index closing values, the Consumer Confidence Index data in Turkey and Volatility IndeX (VIX) Fear Index data in the United States were used for the period of 2004:M0-2018:M04. Long-term analyzes show that the increases in the fear index decrease the stock market index in line with the theoretical expectations, while the increases in the consumer confidence index affect the stock market in a way that does not match the theoretical expectations. It has been determined that both the fear index and the confidence index affect the stock market in a direction consistent with the theoretical expectations. When long and short term analyzes are evaluated together; it was determined that the fear index has a decreasing effect on the stock market in both periods, while the confidence index was found to be effective in the short term. Therefore, it is necessary for the representatives of brokers and brokerage firms to decide on the short term considering the negative effects of VIX and the positive effects of the Consumer Confidence Index. But it can be said that in the long run, it is necessary to exhibit not only the likely VIX but also macroeconomic variables.
