Abstract

There is an extensive literature on benefits of liberalization which leads to welfare increases based on division of labor and specialization. However, this approach which has recently begun to be questioned with debt crises has begun to be added to the fact that there is a decline in domestic value added in exports and, consequently, the increase in imports are apparent. In a country which has this economical structure, the depreciation of the national currency does not affect the competitiveness of the country, so that it cannot increase its exports. Thus, this leads to the form of an import-dependent export structure. In these analysis about the structure whether operating or not in Turkish economy, it was determined that export has reaction on the direction of increases in import and exchange rates in the short term; whereas it was found symmetrical relationships in the long-term. However, it has been determined that the exchange rate effects are weaker than the import effects. This indicates that exports are less sensitive to a policy based on establishing a currency-based competitive power. Hence exchange rate/price competition on exports is not effective in Turkish economy, also it demonstrates that Turkish economy has a characteristic based on selling to abroad by processing in domestic from abroad purchasing. In this context, Turkish economy should be directed to an axis shift by “the growth reducing dependence on strategic importsproviding high value added-considering domestic demand” and is likely to be important in terms of these policies extraction.
