Abstract

Aim: In recent years, herbal products are rapidly increasing interest because of the adverse effects of chemical drugs. Indomethacin is endol derivated non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and widely used for induction of experimental ulcer model. Antioxidants may also play an important role in the prevention of mucosal damage. Hypericum perforatum L., commonly known as St John's wort is a traditional herb that has been used to treat many diseases. St John's wort extract has also effects as an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound healing, antioxidant, antineoplastic, antianxiety, antidepressant and anti-ulcerative effects. Also, we aimed to investigate the healing and protective effects of Hypericum perforatum oil (HPO) on gastric mucosal injury in our study. Methods: In this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. 1 hour before mucosal damage was induced, HPO (2 ml/kg) was added into the groups. Mucosal damage is induced by intragastrically applying 30 mg/kg indomethacin. From samples of stomach, gastric pH, analysis of gastric mucus and ulcer index were calculated. In stomach homogenates SOD, MDA and CAT levels were determined. Results: Ulcerative control group showed higher scores than control group which was treated with HPO (p
