Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a major health problem worldwide. There are quite different BCG vaccination programs in the world against the disease. BCG vaccine continued to be of importance because of the reduction of the incidence of disseminated TB and TB meningitis, while the protection ranged from 0 to 80%. The minimum gestational age and birth weight that the BCG vaccine can safely be given is not clearly defined in the vaccination calendars. Therefore, the use of BCG vaccine in preterm and low birth weight (LBW) infants causes problems in medical practice. Recent studies have shown that BCG vaccination is effective and safe for these infants at birth or immediately after birth, but the minimum gestational age andbody weight for BCG vaccination still remains undetermined. In our country, the Ministry of Health recommends that BCG vaccination be given at the end of the 2 nd postnatal month in the vaccination program. Lack of any explanation for the minimum body weight and gestational age to which the vaccine may be applied and different recommendations in the literature regarding the bodyweight for BCG vaccination are causing confusion in practice. In this review, up-to- date information and recent studies on BCG vaccination in preterm and LBW infants have been compiled and recommendations for the current vaccination program in our country have been presented.
