Abstract

This paper examines the journalism profession and the constraints of the news production process in Turkey mainly by relying on in-depth interviews conducted with journalists and editors at six major Turkish newspapers. First, contextual information is given regarding the conditions in which the journalists work, with special emphasis on the concentrating and conglomerating media industry. Then, the organizational mechanisms which limit the journalists' autonomy and the evaluations they make of them are covered under the headings of Editorial and Other Daily Mechanisms in the Organization, Professional Socialization and Self-censorship, and Professional Values. It is argued that the resistance or solutions to the commercial dictates and the concrete problems the journalists experience are limited, not only because of the limited power of the journalist, but also because of their limited stance in the market with the ownership and in matters of control of editorial interventions.
