Abstract

Hyperprolactinemia is characterized by abnormally increasedserum prolactin levels. Menstrual irregularities and hyperprolac-tinemia can be caused by a variety of medical conditions as wellas due to the use of some psychopharmacological drugs, namelyantipsychotics; it can also develop during antidepressant treat-ment. Bupropion is an antidepressant functioning via the inhi-bition of noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake. The endocrineand sexual adverse events of this agent are rare. In the litera-ture, only one case reporting hyperprolactinemia or galactorrheacaused by bupropion use is available. Here, we present the caseof a patient diagnosed with depressive disorder and receivingvenlafaxine, who developed hyperprolactinemia and oligomen-orrhea after the addition of bupropion the ongoing treatmentand showed serum prolactin levels decreased to normal rangesshortly after the discontinuation of bupropion.
