Abstract

This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of nitrogen doses (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 kg/da) on some malting characteristics of three barley genotypes (Tokak 157/37, Cytris, 1515) under Erzurum conditions in 1996 and 1997. The differences among the genotypes for crude protein, extract and moisture content, sieve analysis (> 2.5 mm), 1000-kernel and hectoliter weights were significant. Tokak 157/37 had the highest grain yield (270.6 kg/da), 1000-kernel (52.5 g) and hectoliter weights (70.7 kg), sieve analysis value (82.6 %) and the lowest moisture content (10.35 %). Genotype 1515 had the highest extract content (80.6 %) and the lowest chaff (8.06 %) and crude protein contents (10.25 %). The results showed that the genotypes in terms of all characteristics (except 1000-kernel weight for 1515) were suitable to Turkish malting barley standard. The effects of nitrogen doses on grain yield, 1000-kernel and hectoliter weights, extract content and crude protein content were significant. The highest grain yield (312.8 kg/da), sieve analysis value (80.3 %), extract content (80.4 %) and the lowest crude protein content (9.59 %) were obtained from 6, 6,2 and 0 kg N/da doses, respectively. When grain yield and malting quality are considered together, application of 6 kg N/da may be recommend for similar condition.
