Abstract

Aim: The aim of present study is to examine the frequency of consumption of food and beverages causing erosion and frequency of tooth erosion in children who deal with amateur sports. and the effect of pool water on erosion among school-age amateur swimmers. Material and Methods: Fifty-one girls, 56 boys, a total of 107 children (aged between 6-15) who were dealing with amateur sports -either swimming or other sports participated in the study. A questionnaire, which contained 22 questions on socio-demographical properties, types and durations of the sports, the consumption of the drinks and food that caused erosion in teeth, was applied to the participant children. Dental erosion and dental caries were recorded by intraoral examinations. Ethical approval for the study was obtained. Results: The rate of the consumption of energy and sports drinks was found as 0.9% and 32.7% and dental erosion was 17%; and the DMFT and dmft values were 6,81±6,34, 1,95±4,13 respectively. The erosion in children who dealt with swimming (28.3%) was found significantly higher than that of the children who dealt with other sports (5.7%). However, no significant differences were observed in the children who dealt with swimming according to the duration of sports in terms of erosion frequency. When the effect of sports drink on erosion was evaluated, no significant differences were detected between groups. Conclusion: Swimming is a risk factor increasing the tooth erosion in children; and dental prevention measures are of importance for children who do sports.
