Abstract

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a neuropathic disease characterized by severe pain that significantly reduces the quality of life of the patient. TN is also known as "Suicidal disease" due to the high suicidal tendency of the patients. It is estimated that the incidence of the disease in the community is considerably higher than reported because the diagnosis is difficult, and the findings are confused with many other diseases. The prevailing opinion of all researches about the treatment of TN is that early intervention for the disease will significantly increase the success of the treatment and will be more effective in reducing the pain of patients. The association of symptoms of TN with tooth-borne pain is a common occurrence. Generally, in such patients, it is seen that the teeth in the related region are treated or even extracted. This leads to unnecessary and incorrect treatment of the healthy teeth of the patient and also delays the diagnosis of TN. Therefore, it is essential for the dentist to have knowledge about TN and to add to the differential diagnosis of pain in these areas. In this review, it is aimed to create a resource that physicians can obtain information about diagnosis and treatment of TN from the literature information from past to present.
