Abstract

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the existence of gastroesophageal reflux GER scintigraphically in children with respiratory tract disease reactive airway disease and/or recurrent respiratory tract infection and to investigate the relationship between patient diagnoses, symptoms, signs, age groups and gastroesophageal reflux. METHODS: This study was conducted by retrospective evaluation of patients who underwent gastroesophageal reflux scintigraphy at the Department of Nuclear Medicine Adnan Menderes University between 1 January 2004 and 1 July 2009. It was investigated whether there is a relation between GER and patient symtoms such as cough, dyspnea, wheezing, nasal discharge and high fever. RESULTS: 113 pediatric patients 65 boys, 48 girls diagnosed with reactive airway disease and/or recurrent respiratory tract infection who were referred to our department with suspicion of GER were enrolled to this study. The mean age of the patients was 6.76 ±3.78 1 month-16 years . GER was detected in 76 patients %67 . Among 76 patients gastroesophageal reflux was detected, cough was detected in 68 90% , dyspnea in 38 50% , wheezing in 34 44% and nasal discharge in 15 %20 and high fever in 30 %39 . DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The relation between the diagnoses, age groups, symptoms and signs of all the patients and the frequency of gastroesophageal reflux was not found statistically significant. For the prediction of gastroesophageal reflux, statistically significant relationship was not detected between respiratory and other symptoms and signs of the patients.
