Abstract

Modern Şırnak (Southeast Turkey) consists of two completely different geographical regions. Thewest- and southern parts are covered with plains, which form the northern extension of NorthernMesopotamia. The north- and eastern parts are defined as Mountainous Şırnak, these are surround ed by high altitude mountains and have a cultural connection with Northeast Anatolia. This moun tainous part begins at the Gabar Mass bordered by the Tigris River in the west, its height increasestowards the east, and merges into the Kato Mountains and Hakkâri Mass in the east.In the Middle Iron Age, this mountainous area constituted an important part of the buffer zonebetween Van Lake Basin-centered Urartu and the Neo-Assyrian to the south. Conflicts betweenthese two states, which do not have a direct border between each other, have often occurred overlarge and small political formations in the buffer zone.During the systematic surveys carried out in the mountainous Şırnak region since 2017, two newNeo-Assyrian sites (Kasrik Höyük and Doğantepe) have been identified in the border region betweenthe mountain and the plain, approximately 25 km from each other. Kasrik Höyük and Doğantepe areimportant where they represent the presence of the Neo-Assyrian state in this mountainous regionin the north of the homeland.
