Abstract

This article discusses the 1993-2000 period in the Palestine-Israel Question, the so-called peace process in the long history of this problem, in terms of the economic transformation of both sides. Israel's attempt to integrate with neo-liberalism as of second half of the 1980's created a crucial change in Israel's class structure, which in turn affected relations with Palestine. Israel's occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip from 1967 to early 1990's provided not only cheap labour force from Palestinians but also a market that Israeli economy needed. As a result of a series of agreements signed in 1990's, Israel partially withdrew from these two regions and accepted an independent Palestinian state to be founded. However in this very same period, Israel broke the dependence of its own economy on cheap Palestinian labour and yet made the Palestinian economy more dependent on it by means of various economic sanctions. That's the main point, the present article will argue, why this long conflict did not evolve into a proper peace in 1990's, as this period rather gave Israel the opportunity to create a new kind of economic dependency between the occupied tenitories and its own state.
