Abstract

The peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a reactive , exophitic lesion occuring on the gingiva and alveolar ridge usually as a result of local irritating factors such as tooth extraction, poor dental restorations, food impaction and poor oral hygiene. This lesion is mostly seen in young people and middle aged adults. Females are more commonly affected than males. It exhibits a peak incidence between 40-60 years of age. The maxilla and mandible are affected with equal frequency whereas the premolar and molar regions are most often involved. Out of the 11 cases 5 were male and 6 were female. The etiyological evaluation revealed trauma, local iritation, tooth extraction, poor restorations and poor oral hygiene. All cases were treated by local excision and elimination of etiyological factors. No reccurence was observed. The aim of this study is to evaluate these 11 cases of PGCG and to make a short review about the demographic, clinical and histopathological features of this lesion.

Özet

Periferal dev hücreli granülomalar (PDHG) diş eti ve alveoler krette oluşan eksofitik reaktif lezyonlardır. Etyolojisi tam anlaşılmamakla beraber genelde diş çekimi, kötü restorasyonlar, bozuk oral hijyen, gıda birikimi ve travma gibilokal iritasyonlara bağlı olarak ortaya çıkarlar. Her yaş grubunda izlenmekle beraber özellikle gençlerle orta yaştaki erişkinlerde görülürler.
