Abstract

Aims of our study were 1) to evaluate the distribution of radiographie subgingival calculus (SGC) and angular defects (AD) recorded on panoramic radiographs, 2) presence of symmetry in the jaws and 3) relation between subgingival calculus and angular defect. Five hundred and forty six panoramic radiographs, from 312 women and 234 men, taken between 1996-2000, were evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 43.73 (SD. 12.91). The presence of symmetry between right and left quadrants of the jaws was analyzed by using Cramer's coefficient test. The relation between SGC and angular defect was analyzed by using Pearson correlation test. According to our results, the percentage of presence of SGC was 4.46 and AD was 1.28. SGC and AD were more frequently detected in males than females. The SGC and AD were most frequently detected in lower jaw central incisors, upper jaw second molars, lower jaw lateral incisors and upper jaw first molars. The symmetry measures in both jaws were moderate for SGC and weak for AD. There was a strong relation between SGC and AD (p=0.01). Within the limits of our study, although the prevalence of SGC and AD were very low, there was a tendency for increasing age and presence of SGCand AD and in both jaws a moderate symmetry was exist.
