Abstract

Objectives: As osteoporosis is a preventable and delayable illness, it is important to determine, reduce or eliminate the risk factors of osteoporosis. For this reason, this study was conducted to determine the risk factors for osteoporosis in women. Materials and Methods: 282 volunteer individuals that are relatives to the students who attend Ankara University Health Sciences Faculty and between 25‐64 ages had participated in the study planned according to descriptive cross‐sectional research principles. A questionnaire including demographic information, nutritional status and osteoporosis risk factors for women was used in the collection of research data. Results: The average age of women is 40,02±11,89 years, 31,21% is between 25‐30 years; 46,10% is between the ages of 31‐50 and 22,69% is between the ages of 51‐65.33, of the participants, 69% had a diagnosed chronic disease and 27,95% of them used drugs continuously. 47,16% of women had a family history of osteoporosis and 34,40% were not regularly exposed to the sun. 42,91% of the women were found to have normal body weight and only 29,08% had normal waist circumference values. The frequency of regular physical activity was determined as 31,21%. Women 51‐65 years of age were found to be receiving lower amounts of energy and protein on a daily basis than women between the ages of 19‐30 (p=0,026, p=0,004, respectively). The study found that women aged 31‐50 years received higher amounts of vitamin C than women aged 19‐30 years (p= 0,016). The differences between milk, cheese, dry legumes and coffee consumption were statistically significant according to age groups (p=0,040, p=0,000, p=0,003, p=0,047). Conclusion: The basic approach to reduce the frequency of osteoporosis should be removing the risk factors of osteoporosis. In this study, the prevalence of some preventable risk factors such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, lack of regular physical activity, inadequate nutrition in particular age groups, and excessive consumption of tea and coffee were found to be high. Community awareness needs to be raised to remove and reduce these risk factors.
