Abstract

Esmolol is a selective beta receptor blocker with rapid onset and short duration of action and inactivated free from liver and renal functions. It is used to prevent and treat arrhythmia, tachycardia and hypertension which is a result of beta adrenergic stimulation. The increase in heart rate and blood pressure according to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation can be controlled by esmolol. We aimed to review the clinical and pharmacological properties of this selective beta adrenergic receptor antagonist along with the literature.
