Abstract

AIM: Hematological malignancies are a heterogeneous group of tumors. It is known that the disease frequency increases with age, however literature reported from our country about the issue is quite limited. In this study, we aimed to examine the distribution of hematological malignancies in geriatric patients admitted to our center by comparing them with young adults. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Our study is retrospective, and adult cases aged 18 and older admitted to our center with a diagnosis of hematological malignancy between January 01, 2018 and November 01, 2020 were included. All data were obtained from the electronic database used for patient follow-up. The age, gender and diagnosis of the cases were recorded and obtained data were analyzed by grouping according to age and diagnosis subgroups. RESULTS: A total of 1733 (708 women, 1025 men) cases were included in the analyzes. When grouped by age, 35% of the cases were geriatric patients aged 65 and older. The most frequently recorded diagnoses in these patients were non-hodgkin lymphoma (30%), chronic lymphoid leukemia (23%) and multiple myeloma (21%) respectively. The included adults between the ages of 18- 64 constituted 65% of the study population. The most frequently diagnosed hematological malignancy in this group was non- hodgkin lymphoma (34%), the second was multiple myeloma (12%) and the third was chronic myeloid leukemia (11%). When the groups were compared in terms of the distribution of hematological malignancies, it was observed that there was a statistically significant difference between young adults and the elderly (p
