Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to compare depression and quality of life in caregiver of stroke patients in the acute and chronic period. Methods: The study included 86 caregiver of stroke patients hospitalized the Neurology Clinic and Physical Therapy Clinics of Diyarbakır Gazi Yasargil Hospital. Personal Information Form for demographic information, Beck Depression Scale for assessing psychological status, and WHOQOL-Bref Quality of Life Scale for measuring quality of life were used by patient caregivers. Results: Caregivers were 46.5% male (n=40), 53.5% female (n=46), 48.8% married, 29.1% primary school graduate, 53.5%'s patients children, 12.8% were spouses of patients. The average age of caregivers was 33.48±12.59 years. In the chronic period, it was found that there was an increase in depressive patients with severe depression, and a significant statistical difference was found between the two groups in terms of depression (X2=5.079, p=0.024). While the scores of physical health (p=0.063), psychological health (p=0.212) and environment area (p=0.114) were not significant in the acute and chronic life quality scores of the patients caregivers, the social relations (p=0.001) score was statistically significant. Conclusion: The frequency of depression of caregivers increased both in acute and chronic periods, and their quality of life decreased. In stroke rehabilitation, a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team consisting of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists and social workers needs to offer education, counseling and treatment services by adopting a focused approach to patients and caregivers instead of only patient-centered approach.

Bulgular: Hastaya bakım verenlerin %46.5’i erkek (n=40), %53.5’i kadın (n=46), %48.8’i evli, %29.1’i lise mezunu, %53.5’i hastanın çocuğu, %12.8’i hastaların eşleri idi.
