Abstract

A vast amount of studies in innovation theory have stressed the importance of location, agglomeration and proximity as main sources of innovativeness and competitive advantage. However, in the recent years, the importance of proximity in innovation process has been heavily criticized. There is a new theoretical approach in the field of innovation and regional development so-called ‘knowledge dynamics’, which focuses on the close and distant interactions of actors to search, to learn and to apply old and new knowledge in the economy. In this study, the knowledge dynamics approach is examined and the development of football tourism in Antalya region is analysed from the perspective of knowledge dynamics. In this context, main actors, events, knowledge types and knowledge transfer processes that play a role in the emergence and the development of football tourism in Antalya are analysed. In the study, close and distant interactions and networking between actors, the effects and diffusion of this knowledge dynamic in region, and the role of public policies are also discussed.
