Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this research is to develop a practical assessment tool that researchers and clinicians canuse to evaluate the stress of a newborn.Study Design: This is a methodological study. 212 newborns, treated and cared for at the neonatal intensive careunit, were included in the study. Data was collected from newborn information forms, the Newborn stress scaleand the Newborn Comfort Behavior Scale (COMFORTneo). The scale was assessed in terms of content validity, concurrent validity, internal consistency and the inter-reliability among the observers. Results: Content validity index of scale is between 0.90 and 1.00. The Newborn Stress Scale, which has a Cronbachalpha coefficient of 0.65-0.81, is highly reliable. Results from the item analysis indicated that item-totalcorrelations (r=0.20-0.66) were satisfactorily high. The concurrent validity found there was a positive strongcorrelation between the scores of the Newborn stress scale and COMFORTneo (r=0.58-0.84; p
