Abstract

In this study, the prevalence of Escherichia coli O157 was investigated in 150 calf minced meat and 150 lamb minced meat samples obtained from retail markets and butcheries in Van. Tryptone Soy Broth added with Novobiocin, Sorbitol MacKonkey Agar with Cefimixe-Tellurit Supplement and Violet Red Bile Agar with methyl-umbellipherylglucorunidase were used for the analysis of the samples. The colonies that were indol (+), sorbitol (-) and fi-glukoronidase (-; 366 nm) and made agglutination with O157 lateks agglutination test kit were identified as E. coli O157. E. coli O157 (4,66 %) was found in calf minced meat samples. In lamb minced meat samples E. coli O157 (2 %) was found. These results clearly reveal that contamination of minced meat by E. coli O157 is quite high and pose the health risks for consumers.
