Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of different denture cleaners on the surface roughness and surface free energy of soft and hard denture lining materials. Materials and Method: Six different denture lining materials (hard liners, acrylic and silicone soft liners,) were selected. Disc shaped specimens were prepared, a profilometer was used for surface roughness values. The contact angles of three reference fluids were measured at the surface of the specimens, the surface free energy was calculated according to the acid-base theory. The samples were kept in distilled water and various denture cleansers (Corega, Fitty Dent, Clorhexidine) for 8 hours a day. After one month of storage, final measurements were made. The data was analyzed by Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests with Bonferroni correction, Kruskal-Wallis test, two-way ANOVA. Results: There was no significant difference between baseline and after immersion in denture cleaners for surface roughness values (p> 0.05). The effect of distilled water on surface roughness was significantly lower than other denture cleaners (p <0.05). Hard liners achieved a significantly different surface roughness values (p <0.05). For hard liners, the values were comparable, however, baseline surface free energy values of hard liners were higher than soft liners. Conclusion: The denture cleaners tested didn’t cause significant changes for surface roughness of the hard denture lining materials. Soft lining materials were found to have low free energy values that could cause bacterial adhesion. Differences in surface free energy of lining materials can affect microorganisms to attach to denture surfaces.
