Abstract

The effect of single dose alcohol administration on the malondialdehyde, glutathione, total protein and hydroxyproline levels of rat liver was evaluated. Sixteen Wistar rats with an average weight of 150-200 g were used in the study. A single dose of 40% ethanol, 0.5g/kg of body weight was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) to the study group of ten rats while a control group of six rats received the same dose of 0.9% NaCl (saline). After 24 hours all the rats were killed and their liver was obtained and evaluated. A significant decrease (p<0.05) was observed only in glutathione levels after 24 hrs and this decrease was not dose dependent.
