Abstract

Background/Aims: This study investigated resistance rates to anibiotics commonly used to treat Helicobacter pylori. Methods: Helicobacter pylori isolates from gastric antral biopsy cultures of 51 patients, admitted to our gastroenterology department for upper gastrointestinal system complaints, were examined for sensitivity to amoxicillin, metronidazole, clarithromycin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin by disk diffusion method. Results: Twentynine patients (57%) were resistant to antibiotics, while 22 patients (43%) showed no resistance. Resistance to metronidazole, clarithromycin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin was found in 25 (49%), five (9.8%), two (3.9%) and three patients (5.9%) respectively. Conclusions: No resistance to amoxicillin was seen. The high resistance rates to antibiotics, especially metronidazole and clarithromycin, in our study is likely to originate from their widespread and inappropriate use at insufficient
