Abstract

Gastroesophageal reflux disease and it's complications are common and important health problems in western countries but the incidence of this disease is not known in Turkey. In this study, the epidemiologic characteristics of this disease were evaluated in our country. Using questionnaire forms the classic symptoms, complications, atypical symptoms and factors that may affect this disease were evaluated. The study was performed on a total of 585 patients in different cities. The male/female ratio was 299/286, mean age 37.8+15 and BMI 24.56+4.23. Endoscopy was performed on 82 of the patients in the study group, and symptoms were graded as rare (< once daily), frequent (≥ once daily) and continuous. When pyrosis and/or regurgitation was taken as reflux score, rare, was 43.6%, frequent 22.6% and continuous 3.1%. There was no relationship between reflüx and area of residence, gender, social class or alcohol intake, but there was a significant correlation with age, cigarette smoking and BMI. There was also a significant correlation between reflüx and dysphagia, odynophagia, halitosis, asthma, chorinc cough, non-cardiac chest pain, dental sensitivity, belching and globus. There was a mostly mild degree of endoscopic esophagitis in 67% of symptomatic patients, which showed a strong correlation with symptom score. There was no difference in H. pylori positivity between patients with or without esophagit is. In conclusion, our study indicates that gastroesophageal reflux disease is a frequent but generally mild disease in our country.
