Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether cholelithiasis is related to gallbladder dysmotility and whether there is a relationship between gallbladder dysmotility and autonomic neuropathy and between autonomic neuropathy and corrected QT interval on ECG, in patients with chronic liver disease. Ejection fraction of the gallbladder was measured in 24 chronic liver patients and 10 controls; non-invasive cardiac tests were used to detect autonomic neuropathy and QT was measured according to the formula of Bazzet (QT = Q-T÷√ (R-R). No significant difference was observed between the mean ejection fraction of the gallbladders of each group (p>0.05), but the change in ejection fraction of the gallbladder was significantly higher in the late period of gallbladder contraction in the patient group (p<0.05). Autonomic neuropathy was found in 14 patients in the patient group, but none of the control group subjects had autonomic neuropathy (p<0.05). No significant difference of ejection fraction of the gallbladder was found in the autonomic neuropathy (positive) and (negative) patient groups (p>0.05). Mean QT (seconds) was significantly longer in the patient group (p<0.05) but there were no differences between autonomic neuropathy (positive) and autonomic neuropathy (negative) patients (p>0.05). There was a poor correlation between the autonomic neuropathy and QT in the patient group (r=0.19). To conclude, gallbladder function is not affected in chronic liver disease, but ejection fraction of the gallbladder is still high in the relaxation period of the gallbladder. The frequency of autonomic neuropathy in chronic liver disease is higher. There is no relationship between gallbladder motility and autonomic neuropathy. QT is significantly longer in chronic liver disease patients, but there is no significant relationship between QT and autonomic neuropathy.
