Abstract

Background/aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic alcohol intake on Helicobacter pylori infection, development of gastritis and gastric emptying time, and their interrelationship. Methods: Fifty males, 30 of whom had a history of more than three months alcohol intake (mean age: 44.5 + 11.5 years) and 20 of whom served as controls (mean age: 45.7 + 8.2 years), were included in the study. All cases underwent endoscopy. Biopsies were obtained for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori and histopathological examination, by means of which scores for Helicobacter pylori intensity and gastric activity were determined. Gastric emptying time was examined with scintigraphy. Results: It was found that while gastric emtying time was prolonged in the alcohol group compared to controls, the difference was not significant. No difference in Helicobacter pylori prevalence between the study and control groups was detected. Moreover, a significant relationship between Helicobacter pylori intensity an d activity of gastritis was detected in the controls, whereas a similar relationship was not present in the study group, in which the rate of gastric emptying significantly accelerated in those with 3+ Helicobacter pylori intensity compared with lower Helicobacter pylori intensity. In the subjects with long term alcohol use, it was found that as gastritis activity increased, gastric emptying hastened, but it was not significant. Conclusions: It was concluded that direct toxic effects of alcohol were involved in gastric mucosal damage occuring among the people drinking alcohol for a long period of time, but that in general, gastric motility probably increased independently of gastritis activity in the presence of Helicobacter pylori infection.
