Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is seldomly observed during the course of pregnancy. This arrhythmia ususally occurs in patients with structural heart disease and the rapid ventricular rates observed in AF can cause serious hemodynamic impairment both in the mother and the fetus. Digoxin, propranolol and verapamil are among the safe and effective agents for ventricular rate control during pregnancy. However, all antiarrhythmic agents potentially have teratogenic effects, and should not be used during pregnancy.
