Abstract

Social work is a human rights based profession in terms of its references and essence. Especially with the development of rights awareness and social rights, the most basic paradigm in the establishment of social services has been a rights-based approach. In view of this relationship between social work and human rights, social work students' attitudes towards human rights education are aimed to be examined in this study. In this context, data were collected from 269 students of Hacettepe University Social Work Department using the Attitude Scale towards Human Rights Education (ASTHRE) developed by Karaman-Kepenekçi (1999) and the socio-demographic information form prepared by the researchers. The study is based on survey method. Stratified sampling method was used in the research by making class distinction. Due to normality analysis that showed that the data were not distributed normally, non-parametric analyzes were used in the analysis. Considering the findings of the study, according to the researches conducted mostly with teacher candidates using IHEYTÖ, social work students' scale scores were higher; female students got higher scores than male students, and the IHEYTÖ scores differed somewhat according to the status of taking courses on human rights. It is also observed that the human rights-themed courses taken during primary and secondary education are not permanent. The results show the importance of human rights education in social work.
