Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare intermittent IV tramadol dose regimens with and without a maintenance tramadol infusion in the treatment of postoperatif pain. Study Design: Thirty six patients (aged between 45-82 years, ASA class 3, 4) undergoing major abdominal cancer surgery were entered in to the trial. It was given general anaesthesia and patients were divided into two group postoperatively in group 1, only PCA was given and in group 2 both PCA and. IV infusion of 5 mglh tramadol were given. ALL of the patients demand dose was 20 mg tramadol no loading dose was used, lockout time was 15 min. The results of the two groups when the patients extuhated with VRS and 24 h after surgery with give point scale were compared by chisquare test and unpaired ttest. Results: Consumption oftramadon in group 1 was 401.25 mg and in group 2 was 413.33 mg. There was no statistical difference between groups. There were sometimes moderate pain in 35 of 36 patients, only one patient have sometimes serious pain suffering in the first 24 hours of postoperative. Conclusion: Both tramadol PCA and PCA plus tramadol infusion produced sufficient analgesia with minimal side effects in PCA after major abdominal surgery.
