Abstract

Homocysteine (Hcy) is a natural, vasculotoxic and thrombogenic aminoacid containing sulphur. State of hyperhomocysteinemia has been increasingly counted among the risk factors of ischemic stroke in recent years. In this study, Hcy plasma levels in the ischemic stroke cases at the acute and subacute periods were evaluated which was different from the ones done before. Control group included 20 individuals and patient group included 25 patients. Relationship between the Hcy levels measured with enzyme immune assay method, and clinical course, other risk factors, neuroradiological imaging, and some laboratory parameters were explored. In the acute stage, average plasma Hcy level was 11.73±9.00 nmol/ml, and in the subacute period, it was 14.52±9.11nmol/ml. Average Hcy level of control group was 12.02±6.52 nmol/ml. Levels of subacute period were observed to be increased compared to control group though, it was not found statistically significant. These results support the opinion that the mild and moderate degree hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for ischemic stroke. Average plasma folic acid levels of acute and subacute period were found to be low compared control group. This result is correlated with relation of stroke with folate hypovitaminosis at literature. After ischemic stroke, in the acute period, plasma Hcy levels do not increase, but in the subacute period increase in the Hcy levels is observed. For this reason, in the patients with ischemic stroke, Hcy measurements may give opinion in the subacute period differently from other risk parameters.
