Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As mortality from stroke decreases and mean survival time increases, it has become increasingly important to assess health-related quality of life in clinical trials. We aimed to investigate the influence of time on the health-related quality of life of hémiplégie patients. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with hemiparesis of vascular origin, 18 women and 21 men participated in this study and they were assigned to two groups according to time after stroke. The duration after stroke was shorter than 6 months in the first group which was consisting of 21 patients and eighteen patients in the second group had a stroke duration more than 12 months. Health-related quality was assessed by the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Disability was evaluated by using the Barthel index and Functional Indepence Measure (FIM). RESULTS: There were no significant differences in age, gender, lesion laterality distribution, and type of stroke between the two groups. There was no statistically significant difference in Barthel and FIM scores between the two groups. However, mental health, physical and social functioning subscales of the SF-36 were significantly lower in the second group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggested that, despite stable functional status, health-related life quality might be deteriorated over time.
