Abstract

Objective: Cloninger developed a dimensional psychobiological personality model that examines variations on temperament and character which are the main components of personality. This model included four tempera-ment dimensions (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence and persistence) and three character dimensions (self-directedness, co¬operativeness and self-transcendence). These are assessed with the Tempera-ment and Character Inventory (TCI) which performed by Cloninger and his colleagues. In this study, our aim was to examine the temperament and character profiles of the patients that are diagnosed as having a first episode major depressive episode. Methods: In this study, 54 patients with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder based on DSM-IV-TR and 75 healthy controls were included. After filling sociodemographic information forms for the participants, their psychiatric diagnoses were investigated with SCID-I (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Temperament and Character Inventory were performed. Results: In this study, the harm avoidance dimension with all the subscales was significantly high in the patient group compared to the control group. Exploratory excitability subscale of novelty seeking, dependence subscale of reward dependency, self-directedness and cooperation dimensions were significantly low in patient group com-pared to the control group. There was no significant difference in persistence and self-transcendence dimensions. Conclusion: This study makes us think that dimensions like harm avoidance, self-directedness and cooperation are associated with depression.
