Abstract

Objective: This prospective intervention study is conducted in between November 2016 and October 2018 as a part of Psychosocial Support Program for Breast Cancer Patients by Ankara Mamak Municipality. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of psychodrama groups on self-compassion and distress in breast cancer patients. Methods: The study group was created among breast cancer patients diagnosed at least one year ago, by the announcement at primary care health centers of Mamak Municipality. The patients were participated at psychodrama therapy groups 3 hours a day and once in a week for 21 weeks. Self-Compassion Scale and Distress Thermometer were applied for three measurements; first at the beginning, second at the end of the group sessions and third at the 18th month after the sessions were completed. Results: Following the psychodrama groups, the levels of Distress Thermometer obviously decreased and the low levels were protected until the 18 months after the end of the intervention at the patients without any additional stressor. Self-compassion scale results were about the same success. Especially the levels of self-kindness subscale increased when the social isolation feelings decrease. Discussion: This study shows that psychodrama has a supportive positive effect on self-compassion and on decreasing distress levels in breast cancer patients.
